Barges and cranes used in the construction of the viaduct to replace the eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge float on the San Francisco Bay in October of 2006. Due largely to a partial collapse during the Loma Prieta Earthquake in 1989 the decision was made to replace the entire eastern span of the bridge instead of retrofitting it. The project is scheduled to complete in 2012 at an estimated cost of $6.3 billion which would make it second only to Boston's Big Dig as the most expensive public works project. Photographed 10/06
